Dutch A-team rider and European silver medallist in 2001, Arjen Teeuwissen, has decided to pull back out of the Dutch WEG Selection Trials. His 14-year old Goliath T (by Zebulon) has performed below his standard level in 2002
and is not in the right shape for the World Equestrian Games in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, September 9 - 22, 2002.
Teeuwissen and Goliath T produced a series of disappointing performances since the beginning of the 2002 dressage season and was not even able to win a medal at the 2002 Dutch Dressage Championships. At the CDI in Moskou, the duo seemed to be on the better hand but in a final test at the CDI Norten Hardenberg at the end of July, Teeuwissen was not able to end in the top five and produce a decent score.
The Dutch excuse for Teeuwissen's retreat from the WEG Selection Trials is an ulcer. "Goliath seems to be having problems with an ulcer and it takes a few months to heal," he commented. "Goliath did not deserve to compete in Jerez when he's not in top shape."
The other Dutch A-team members will ride a last observational competition August 11 in Kootwijk, The Netherlands. Those who will be competing are: Coby van Baalen with Ferro, Marlies van Baalen with Idocus, Tineke Bartels with Broere Jazz, Ellen Bontje with Gestion Silvano N, Sonja Gademann with Gestion Jup, Anky van Grunsven with Gestion Krack C, Gonnelien Rothenberger-Gordijn with Jonggor`s Weyden and Imke Schellekens-Bartels with Gestion Janssen.
At the end of the show, chef d'Equipe Ghislain Fourage will anounce the official Dutch WEG Team.
