Yesterday evening, the white sire Pion, one of the foundation stallion of the KWPN Dutch Warmblood Society, passed away in his stall at Joop van Uytert's stallion station. Bred by Mrs L. Geertzema, Pion was by Abgar xx out of an Epigoon dam. He was 29 years old.
"Pion was the foundation stallion of our stallion station," Joop van Uytert Junior said. "My father gave up his contracter's business to devote himself to the horse business and make a new living out of the stallion Pion. I always thought that Pion would become 35 or so. He was so tough and in shape. Unfortunately, he didn't make it."
Pion sired a large collection of licensed sons and successful sport horses. His approved offspring was Aktion, Argus and Democraat. He sired Grand Prix dressage horses Aktion, Allure, Remember and Duphar and Prix St Georges horses Picasso, Conquestador, Cosmos, I'm A Star, Inovation and Pione. He also passed on good show jumping qualities to international horses such as Hermann's Paledo, Adora, Diamond Forever and Endeavour.
