The war for Cherie between Gisela Carstens and Karin Rehbein has not yet come to an end. The 9-year old Hanoverian mare has returned to Gestut Gronwoldhof against the will of owner Gisela Carstens.
"Cherie is with me again, but I can't say more on the topic," Rehbein replied concisely.
In October 2002, Carstens decided to take away the Young Horse World Champion mare Cherie from Karin Rehbein after several disputes between owner and rider. Carstens moved the lovely black mare, who is now trained at Prix St Georges level, to Cherie's breeder Angela and Klaus Hoeber in Salzhausen, Germany.
Last Monday, Carstens visited her mare at the Hoeber facility, but found an empty stall. "Behind my back, and against my will, an agreement has been reached between the Hoebers and Mrs Rehbein," Carstens fulminated. "I'm very much disappointed about what has happened."
The Hoeber family explains the situation as follows. "There was a contract between Mrs Rehbein, Mrs Carstens and us which said that the training of Cherie had to be done by Mrs Rehbein, and Mrs Carstens is legally not allowed take away the mare from Mrs Rehbein." Klaus Hoeber continues that, "we tried to reach an agreement with Mrs Carstens, but it didn't work. I don't know what the future will be like for Cherie."
