For the second year running, Irish Grand Prix rider Anna Merveldt has been appointed as the official team trainer for the Italian Juniors and Young Riders, with the additional responsibility for Pony riders in 2011.
The Italian Equestrian Federation (FISE) pointed out that Merveldt's strategy is the following: "Taking into consideration the worldwide financial situation, the FISE and Anna are striving to keep costs low for everyone involved while ensuring that all potential riders and horses get enough show experience, so as to build their confidence and ringcraft without exaggerating their outings."
Anna said, that they intend to have 4 qualifying shows, one national and one international in Italy and two other internationals. Combinations will be expected to achieve at least 65%. Following this, with the aid of the updated ranking list, the riders for each team will be selected accordingly.
Clinics are being held during the first few months of the year at the Federal Centre in Rome and in Milan to scout for new combinations from both the north and south of Italy. A long list of potential team riders will be compiled from these clinics and from performances at various national shows, who subsequently, will be invited for further tuition.
"Anna’s scientific approach to training will enable riders and their personal trainers to work on agreed and measurable goals between clinics and shows," FISE stated.
Merveldt moved to Italy in 2007 and has in a few short years built up a strong reputation for herself as a top dressage trainer with high standards and consistent results, who is dedicated to the continued development of both horse and rider in dressage. She continues to compete Internationally for Ireland on her experienced horse, Coryolano as well as maintaining close ties and organising special clinics with other top international trainers.
"The breadth of Anna's experience, connections, and dedication is a huge bonus to FISE, and together they intend to build strong Pony, Junior and Young Rider teams over the next few years," the FISE PR department explained. "When asked about her part-time appointment as Team Trainer for the Ponies, Juniors and Young Riders, Anna said that she has many good people behind her, and that she is only too happy to assist in the growth of Italian Dressage."
