A training day for Irish Young Breeders will be held on 19 February 2011 from 1.30pm to 4.30pm at Monart Equestrian, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford with trainer Maurice Coleman. The Irish Young Breeders Programme is aimed at young people, aged between 14 and 25 years

that have an interest in horses. Participants come from various equine backgrounds and do not have to be breeders or horse owners to become involved.

To attend the training day breeders should pre-book by contacting Wendy Conlon, Teagasc Equine Advisor, (mobile: 087 9879083; Email: wendy.conlon@teagasc.ie).

The Young Breeders Programme is a wonderful opportunity for young people to meet with their peers and make contacts in Ireland and throughout the world who share their interest in horses. The main activities of the Young Breeders Programme involve training days and national and international competitions.

The concept of Young Breeders was first introduced in Ireland in 2005 and has since been encouraged and developed by Horse Sport Ireland and Teagasc. The Young Breeders Training is mainly focused on assessing, exhibiting and breeding performance horses. Training days vary from demonstrations with rider and industry specialists, to trips to horse sales to evaluate and identify potential competition horses alongside prominent performance experts.

Young Breeders training and competitions provide an important knowledge foundation for young people involved in the horse industry, especially in the areas of purchasing/selling horses or ponies, making decisions in relation to mating of mares and stallions and presenting horses for sale, shows/competitions and inspection.

The main competitive goal of Young Breeders are the 2011 World Championships for International Young Breeders, held this year at the Selle Francais head quarters in Chazey sur Ain, France, 22-24 July 2011.
