Marina Mattsson and Sara Henriette Bergstrom Kallstrom became the national champions at the 2011 Swedish Junior and Young Riders Championships held in Stromsholm, Sweden, on 2 - 5 June 2011. Junior Mattsson and Young Rider Bergstrom Kallstrom were the only two ladies to score an overall average about 70%.
The 17-year old Eslov based Marina Mattsson saddled her sensitive Swedish warmblood Beckham (by Bernstein x Koncerz xx) for the Championships and scored 71.081 in the team test, 69.825% in the individual and 73.300% in the Kur to Music. With a total of 71.402% she stayed well ahead of silver medal winning Anna Drugge on Stroller (by Highlight x Master) with an average of 68.116%. Nina Rademaekers and the German bred Acanto (by Abanos x Grenadier) grabbed the bronze with a 66.804% total
"I had a few mistakes in the canter work (in the kur) but otherwise he felt really good," Mattsson said after winning the freestyle. "I really had to ride for it because the competition was very good this year." The 18-year old Drugge was very pleased with silver. "My horse Stroller is very sensitive to different surfaces and he was a bit careful in the qualifiers but today went much better." The 18-year old Rademaekers couldn't believe she had won bronze after she placed fifth in the freestyle. "I did not dare to believe it would be enough. I guess I still do not really believe I won a medal," Rademaekers commented. "I will probably later tonight."
In the Young Riders division, Jan Brink's student Sara Henriette Bergstrom Kallstrom wielded the axe of power aboard her Swedish bred Diezel (by De Niro x Uttini) scoring almost 4% higher on average (73.969%) than silver medal winning Josefine Kronfeldt on Poet (by Pomme Royal x Mowgli) with 69.039%. The bronze went to Elin Aspnas on the Hanoverian mare Donna Romma (by Don Frederico x Warkant) with 69.001%
Bergstrom Kallstrom scored three times above 70%. She got 73.860 in the Prix St Georges, 73.947 in the individual test and 74.100 in the Kur to Music Finals. A teary-eyed gold medal winning Bergstrom was quite emotional during the press conference, where she said, "It feels so great to win in Sweden, because I have not competed here in six months." Sara Henrietta competed in the Sunshine Tour in Spain in March and in Saumur in April and has decided on moving permanently to Spain in the autumn of 2011 to focus on dressage. "I got a job offer there I couldn't refuse."
Silver medal winning Kronfeldt impressed in the freestyle in which she scored her highest mark of the weekend, 70.100%, on Poet. "He loves the freestyle," said Josefine. "He's so extremely positive inside the arena. The silver is more than I could ever dream of." Bronze medal winning Aspnas looks up to Bergstrom Kallstrom who has been raising the Swedish flag all over Europe. "It's really good that she has such a high level because it stimulates us to be better," she commented.
