Dana van Lierop, Stephanie Kooijman and Angela Krooswijk won the final Dutch youth observation trial in Uden, The Netherlands, on Saturday 25 June 2011. It was the final qualifier before the announcement of the Dutch teams for the 2011 European Pony, Junior and Young Riders Championships held in Jaszkowo, Poland, and Broholm, Denmark (20 - 24 July).
In the pony division Dana van Lierop won the pony test on Lavinia Arl's German Riding Pony mare Day of Diva. The pair scored 73.84% and beat Sanne Vos on the German Riding pony mare Champ of Class (72.87%). Four pony riders were able to score above 70%.
"It's hard to go up in the rankings, but it's even harder staying there," commented Dutch youth rider's chef d'equipe Tineke Bartels.
In the junior riders' category, Bartels' student Stephanie Kooijman excelled aboard the 8-year old Dutch warmblood gelding Winston (by OO Seven). The pair achieved the high score of the day, 75,9%. Anne Meulendijks and the impressive black Ohio (by Indoctro) were second with 72,16%. The highest scores on average were ridden in the junior classes.
"They are riding really strongly," said Bartels. "The fun part is that youth riders rearn quickly. With the right guidance, a total package of training and the right balance in between the build-up phases -- training and rest -- it quickly seems that the riding goes automatically and you don't have to do anything for it. But it takes skill to keep that total package in order." Bartels warned for over-training a horse. "Everybody just wants that success so much, parents, trainers. It's fantastic. But something giving trust and training a bit less hard are the only right thing for a combination. The word "too" is something not good."
Young rider Angela Krooswijk left no doubt about it that she's the unbeatable Dutch rider in her division. Aboard the Rhinelander stallion Roman Nature (by Rohdiamant) she scored 73.95% and beat herself on Flash (by Fidermark) with 71.84%. Melissa Tychon and the Trakehner Marinetty (by Solero) were third with 71,05%.
Bartels is struggling with the selection of a young riders' team. Only Krooswijk has been able to perform constantly this season and ride faultfree tests. "The other young riders too often have lesser performances. They are too often not on form," Bartels admitted.
