Three dressage riders are in the running for the spot of rider representative on the 2012 FEI Dressage Committee following the resignation of IDRC president Margit Otto-Crepin in July 2010.
The three candidates that have been pushed forward for nomination are Spanish Luis Lucio, Colombian Maria Ines Garcia Cuellar and British Wayne Channon.
In the past the International Dressage Riders’ Club (IDRC) has been recognised by the FEI as the governing body which represents all riders and it was understood to have had had the right to appoint their own representative but it appears that this has changed as now two National Federations decided to officially suggest their own candidates to the FEI Dressage Committee.
The 53-year old Luis Lucio is a double Olympian, having competed on the Spanish team at the 1996 Atlanta Games and 2000 Sydney Olympics. Wayne Channon has been a British team member at the 2005 European Championships and 2006 World Equestrian Games and is the current secretary-general of the IDRC. Maria Ines Garcia Cuellar competed in the medium class at the 2009 FEI World Dressage Challenge.
“I am surprised to see that we have three candidates but apparently there is nothing to stop National Federations proposing their own candidates," said IDRC president Kyra Kyrklund. "I just hope that the Dressage Committee recommends our candidate and that the Nominations Committee sees that only the IDRC has the infrastructure to truly represent international riders and supports him.”
The new rider representative for the 2012 FEI Dressage Committee will be voted upon at the 2011 General Assembly in Rio de Janeiro
