Most people have a special place in their heart for their country, state, region or city. It is this passion that makes people want to see the ‘Hometown Boy or Girl’ win. Socially, we all have great friendships with many people from different areas

but when it comes to the crunch, we all want to see people from our place of origin come out on top. Like most sports which have national championships, this sort of cross boarder rivalry rises to the surface.

Well, it’s no difference for the Australian Dressage Championships. From 27 to 30 October 2011, The Sydney International Equestrian centre will be the battleground for horse and rider combinations from across the sparse continent of Australia. Some states will have teams and some will only have individuals compete. At the moment three of the seven states of Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, have confirmed they have selected a team. And for the states that haven’t, there will be plenty of individuals with supporters in tow that will give the team members a run for their money.

Australian Olympians and World Equestrian Games competitors, along with regional and state champions will be part of the mix; all hoping their hard work will climax during this competition.

The flags of the Sydney International Equestrian Centre will be flying high to welcome all horse and rider combinations. There will also be competition in the trade village, all showcasing their wares.

With the London Olympics just over the hill, the rivalry will be healthy and hot, especially as these championships will include a Regional Dressage Team Qualifier competition for the 2012 Olympic Games. The big picture scenario is who will be part of the Australian Team but the smaller picture is which state or region will they come from.

Prue Spurrett (President of Dressage New South Wales) loves the healthy rivalry. “Australia is a huge country and there’s a long distance between most states. This makes the rivalry more relevant.”

The Australian Dressage Championships gives all dressage fans and riders the opportunity to see the best in Australia and at the same time support their favourite horse and rider combinations. All information for ticketing and the program can be found at www.dressagensw.com.au/nationals
