David Pincus Tells You What Happened in His World!
During a non horsey dinner party I found my self seated next to a pregnant lady, in order to make conversation I inquired if that was her first or has she other children already. She replied that this was her first and then proceeded to elaborate how difficult it was for her to conceive, she spent many years under doctors and specialists treatments and only after many years to her delight it happened, and then she added “I suppose with your horses you just let nature take its course easy peasy “
I felt I had to put her right about the matter and explained that often I have mares which are difficult to get in foal, just like in humans, science is there to intervene and help. As she was interested to know further I went through the whole procedures that we have to go through in order to get some mares in foal. I explained how we induce the mare to come into season with the aid of prostaglandin, the extensive use of ultrasound scanning to accurately follow the cycle to determined ovulation, I further explained that often ovulation has to be induced with luteinizing hormone and then extensive uterine cleaning with anti biotic is required to insure hospitable environment for the new embryo. It seemed that all this fascinated her as she had to endure similar procedures herself.
And then she asked “ if after all that the mare is still not in foal what do you do then?” “Sometimes we change the stallion,“ I said. She looked at me and said “how funny, that's what worked for me.”
