Pony rider Semmieke Rothenberger, junior Anna Christina Abbelen and young rider Vivien Niemann won the 2013 German Youth Riders Championships held in Munich, Germany, on 16 - 18 August 2013. The German National Championships for FEI pony, junior and young riders are hosted at a different location each year; this year the Olympic stadium in Munich was the exclusive venue.
In the pony division the 13-year old Semmieke Rothenberger, who celebrates her 14th birthday next week, was unbeatable setting a new world record score in the team championships test on the first day of competition. Aboard the 15-year old palomino stallion Deinhard B (by Dornik B x Golden Dancer), Rothenberger scored 79.744% in the team test, followed by winning scores of 79.756% in the individual and 82.300% in the Kur to Music. Her total of 241.800 set her far apart from silver medalist Sophie Kampmann on the chestnut stallion Voyager (by Vivaldi x Night Power). In her last year at ponies, Kampmann climbed her way up throughout the weekend, improving her marks consistently from a 75.342% to a 77.439% in the individual and 77.725% in the Kur (total: 230.506). The bronze went to Nadine Krause on the palomino stallion Danilo (by Dornik B x Power Boy). She was on Kampmann's heels all the time with scores of 75.897%, 76.341% and 76.750% (total: 228.988 pts).
Heiner Schiergen's 16-year old student Anna Christina Abbelen dominated the field in the junior riders' division with two victories in the team championship test (74.414%) and in the kur (80.350%). Only in the individual test, Abbelen and her cute black gelding Furst on Tour (by Furst Heinrich x Rubioso N) had to let silver medal winning Claire Louise Averkorn on Condio B (by Contendro x Willems Ass) go ahead of her. Trained by German pony chef d'equipe Connie Endres, Averkorn posted scores of 72.703%, 75.439% and 77.275%. Joline Thuning, who was not a member of the German team at the 2013 European Junior Riders Championships, outmaneuvered several more experienced riders to end up on the bronze step of the podium. Aboard Don Dayly (by Depardieu x Don Primero) she stayed quite far behind the second placed rider but her scores of 70.180%, 71.535% and 74.875% sufficed for bronze. Big absentee at the Championships was 2013 European Junior Champion Johanne Pauline von Danwitz on Habitus.
While at the 2013 European Young Riders Championships, Vivien Niemann and Cipollini (by Compliment x Western Star) were not on greatest form, but in Munich the experienced duo took revenge and surfaced at the top of the ranking in the YR division with solid scores of 73.904%, 73.421% and 77.275%. The pair finish on a golden total of 224.600 points. European silver medal winning Juliette Piotrowski and her 8-year old Oldenburg bred Sir Diamond (by Sandro Hit x Donnerhall) finished in silver medal position with 71.798%, 73.070% and 76.000% to total 220.868 points. Bianca Nowag and Fair Play RB (by Fidermark x Brentano II) were breathing down Piotrowski's neck with their 71.404%, 72.456% and 76.425% marks and captured the bronze with a total of 220.285 points.
