Swedish Grand Prix rider Mattias Jansson has lost his small tour horse Kalundi on Monday 26 August 2013. While the cause of death is unknown, the horse has suffered from transport sickness and a virus might have damaged the nervous system.
The 7-year old Danish warmblood gelding Kalundi was by Don Schufro x Solos Carex and bred by Kristian Jensen. Maria Ring acquired the horse at auction in Denmark as a 2-year old and Mattias Jansson trained him up to Grand Prix level. The horse was last competed at the 2013 CDI Kapellen at the beginning of August.
While travelling home from training at Anky van Grunsven's yard in The Netherlands, the horse developed transport sickness and was treated at the equine clinic for it. The dark bay gelding recovered but on Sunday 25 August he experienced issues with his movement mechanism and collapsed. On Monday morning the horse passed away despite veterinary care.
"He went to sleep with my head in his lap on Monday morning 3 AM," a bereaved Jansson told Tidningen Ridsport. "It's very tragic. I will never get such a horse again. He was so incredibly talented in piaffe and passage, he was a ready-made Grand Prix horse."
Jansson has no insurance to cover the costs for a necropsy.
