2013 KNHS Subli Championships

The 4-year old El Diablo, the 5-year old Devil Diamant N and the 6-year old Chardonnay became the grand champions of the 2013 KNHS Subli Cup Championship of which the finals were held at the KNHS Equestrian Centre in Ermelo, The Netherlands, on Saturday 28 December 2013.

The Subli Championship Finals, for which riders have to qualify via a series of selection events, is the official Dutch Young Horse Championships open to all breeds, whereas the Pavo Cup Finals are restricted to KWPN registered horses.

Marie-José Timmermans surprised herself by winning the 4-year old division aboard the Dutch warmblood gelding El Diablo (by Zenon x Krack C). Judges Marion van Wissen, Johan Hamminga and Mariette Sanders-Van Gansewinkel gave the winning pair a 9 for walk and trot and 8 for canter. El Diablo left Chantal Nijpjes on Enjoy N (by Valdez x Turbo Magic) behind her. This pair earned a 9.5 for trot which was the highest mark for the gait given in the 4-year old division.

"I'm very happy," Marie Jose commented. "I had won the selection trial in Kootwijk, but didn't compete today with the thought of winning." The judges commented that El Diablo is "a horse with much suppleness and a very nice technique and he appears to be very rideable. He is nice and quiet in the contact and presented a lovely image. Enjoy N is a horse with much potential. He was very nice in the contact and appeared experienced. He can collect and extend well and has a nice dressage model."

In the 5-year old division Chantal's twin sister Jessica Nijpjes topped the leader board with the chestnut Devil Diamant N (by Florencio x Flemmingh). The pair scored a winning 82.00% and the judges praised the chestnut for its activity. His walk was the best gait, which earned him an 8.6. The canter was expressive. For general impression the horse scored 8.3 which totalled 82 points. "This is so great," said Jessic. "We bought Devil Diamant as a foal. Me and my sister both tried out with six horses in total and all six of them qualified for the finals. It's great to win with your own horse." Fieke Houwen and the Rhinelander branded Spielberg's Cartier (by Spielberg x Jazz) finished in silver medal position with 81.60%. The pair earned an 8.6 for canter and finished on an 81.6 total. Lillian Merx and her home bred KWPN Darkhill (by Uphill) got bronze.

Vai Bruntink and the chestnut KWPN bred Chardonnay (by Winningmood) won the 6-year old division, barely edging out Stephanie de Frel on Carstenwaard (by Don Schufro). Lobke de Jong and Cirano (by United) ended up with bronze. Bruntink was very pleased with the victory and her 83.80%. She commented, "Chardonnay is a very nice horse. He now gets a bit of rest and then we'll prepare for the Indoor Championships at ZZ-Zwaar level. It was very tight tonight and just a fraction of a point." De Frel received a score of 83.20 to place second. "It was the best test I ever rode with him. I already won the first shows at ZZ-Zwaar with him and today it was an advantage with the flying changes." De Jong was a little less pleased with her final ride. "I had won all four selection trials with Cirano," she confessed. "So I did have a lot of expectations, but I ended up being lucky just to ride the finals because he was too fresh in the first test today. In the Finals I could ride him better again."
