The Belgian Equestrian Federation and chef d'equipe Laurence van Doorslaer have announced the team that will represent Belgium at the 2014 European Pony Championships to be held in Millstreet, Ireland, on 29 July - 3 August 2014. Some last minute commotion amongst the Belgian pony parents have led to the selection of a younger, less experienced Belgian team travelling to Ireland.
Three of Belgium's strongest riding pony combinations (Arl, Peytier, Buelens) dropped out of team selection. One of them did not even post their candidacy and another pair withdrew after the CDI Compiegne. Both cited that the 1,500 euro ferry trip to Ireland was too stressful on the parents' budget as the Belgian Equestrian Federation (KBRSF) provides zero financial support in the travel expenses.
Belgium's leading pony combination, Antonia Arl and Defilee de Mode, is not competing because the European Pony Championships co-incide with the Belgian Dressage Championships and, as indicated by the federation, they have chosen to compete at the latter event.
Belgium might not be going to Ireland without the strongholders of the team, but now they are going with four very enthusiastic girl who are willing to go and cherish the experience and dream of competing at the European Championships.
The selected Belgian pony team includes:
- Laura De Graeve - Rasputin
- Amber Heidbuchel - Ashen Dew Drop
- Suraya Hendrikx - De Rechri
- Laura Luyten - Nieuwmoed’s Rudo
The first reserve is Louise Mourlon-Beernaert (Don't Dream), the second reserve is Amber Heidbuchel (Dollarboy).
