With 8 days to go until the cut-off date on 29 June 2014, the potential Canadian WEG team is taking shape as the updated WEG leaderboard ranking has been posted following the Grand Prix at the CDI3* Cedar Valley, Ontario, on 21 June 2014.
The qualification period comes to an end on 29 June and the CDI Caen, Perl and Calgary are still to come. According to the Canadian WEG criteria Equine Canada reserves the right to decide not to send a team unless the team average is over 70%.
The four leading Canadian WEG riders most likely to make the team are:
- Belinda Trussell - Anton - 4 Qualification Scores - Average 70.425%
- Megan Lane - Caravella - 4 Qualification Scores - Average 70.42%
- David Marcus - Chrevi's Capital - 4 Qualification Scores - Average 69.629%
- Karen Pavicic - Don Daiquiri - 4 Qualification Scores - Average 68.565%
The reserve rider is most likely going to be 2012 Canadian Olympian Jacqueline Brooks on D Niro. It is not yet certain if she will be a travelling reserve or not.
"After a long nine month score chasing schedule to meet a selection criteria of four scores over 68 we came up just short with another 67," Brooks commented today. "Although three of the judges awarded Goose the much coveted 68% threshold score, two did not. And while the average of his four top scores is over 68, we have had too many near misses this season including a 67.9 during a Florida season with no scores under 67%. I want to wish David Marcus, Belinda Trussell, Megan Lane, and Karen Pavicic the best of luck in Normandy. I am proud of Goose for finishing in the reserve spot and hoping his services will not be needed. But if they are, you know he will be willing and able."
The Canadian dressage team is headed by technical advisor Desi Dillingham and team trainer Volker Moritz. Victoria Winter is the Chef d'Equipe, Dr. Geoff Vernon is the team veterinarian and Christine Peters the team manager.
