The 4-year old Forty, the 5-year old Eddieni and the 6-year old Dion Johnson DVB were the winners of the 2014 Dutch Young Horse Championships, also known as the KNHS Subli Championships, held in Ermelo, The Netherlands, on Saturday 20 December 2014. The Subli Championships are open to all breeds, whereas the Pavo Cup for Dutch young horses is only open to KWPN registered youngsters.
Seventeen 4-year olds qualified for the finals and Jennifer Sekreve claimed her stake on the licensed stallion Forty (by UB40 x Contango) by winning the finals. The bay stallion was very lightfooted and had much self carriage. Sekreve, who has been riding Forty since March 2014? scored a winning total of 80.8 points. German Stefanie Wolf became the runner-up with the Dutch bred mare Filinda (by Zhivago x Fidermark). The chestnut mare stood out with her correct walk and body usage.
"Third time's a charm," said Sekreve. "I had finished twice in second position with Brokaat and Before Sunrise before. This is my first young horse title. Forty is a very nice horse with a great character and a very athletic body. I want to qualify for the World Championships in Verden next year."
In the 5-year old division Theo Hanzon topped the leader board on Eddieni (by Johnson x Negro) with an 83.4 point score. The chestnut gelding with white stockings impressed the judges with his uphull canter and quality in the counter canter. Dominique Filion and Laura Quint's Hanoverian bred mare Donna Lisa (by Dancier x Wolkentanz I) finished second with 81.2 points. The mare stood out with her elastic trot work.
"I never expected to improve on my second place in the morning, but this is so nice of course," said Hanzon. "Eddieni is a very safe and nice horse. We conclude the year nicely now after also earning the title of best gelding in the Pavo Cup."
In the 6-year old division Lisanne der Nederlanden and Coby van Baalen's Dutch bred Dion Johnson DVB (by Johnson x Ferro) moved into the winner's circle with a score of 83.4 points after winning the warm-up class in the morning. The bay gelding impressed with his strength and uphill tendency. Vai Bruntink and the Dutch mare Darabel (by Westpoint x Don Schufro) were the reserve champions with 81.2 points. The beautiful mare excelled with her suppleness, suspension and activity.
"This is the coronation of a very beautiful year," Der Nederlanden explained. "We won several selection trials, became Gelderland regional champion and Z1-level reserve champion at the Nationals."
