Karin and Ludwig Zierer operate a small but fine private dressage stable near Landshut, with seven sport horses, three broodmares and several young horses. They recently celebrated a great success at the stallion licensing in Holstein, when Alsandair, their home-reared son of Ampère, obtained a breeding licence. Karin Zierer tells us how they look after their Grand Prix horses, and she describes the optimal preparation they gave their young dressage star using Equine 74 Gastric.
Horses are really sensitive souls. Their stomach is known to be a sensitive organ – they cannot tolerate stress very well. For horses performing at the highest level, stress is sometimes hard to avoid.
What has been your experience in this field?
Karin Zierer: “So far we have never had a noticeable problem with gastrointestinal irritation or inflammation of the stomach lining. But Lenny Kravitz, my husband’s Grand Prix horse, is very tense and restless, especially at tournaments. We never thought this was connected with his stomach, though. We thought it was because he was nervous.
It sounds as if the horse has become quieter now.
“Yes, somehow he has. Although he has still enough energy – which, as a top dressage horse, he definitely needs. But overall, Lenny is more balanced and a bit quieter. We just have the feeling that he feels more comfortable now.”
And to what do you attribute this well-being?
“Our friend Wolfgang Schade recommended the Equine 74 Gastric supplement to us; he has also found it to be very good for his dressage horses in terms of well-being, feeding behaviour and willingness to perform. It was on his advice that we tried it with Lenny Kravitz. And what can I say? We are delighted! So delighted that now all of our sport horses are getting it as part of their daily ration.”
Is that also true for Alsandair, who recently got his licence?
“Yes, exactly. We gave Alsandair Equine 74 Gastric throughout the entire period of preparation for the licensing and during the licensing itself. That kind of licensing is a really gruelling procedure for stallions that are just two and a half years old – it’s physically and mentally gruelling. We can’t pretend otherwise. So we decided to support Alsandair by giving him this supplement.”
And it worked. The stallion was approved, wasn’t he?
“That’s right! And, of course, we were overjoyed about that. But we are also happy about Alsandair’s excellent condition – including during the licensing process. Even on the main day, when he had to appear in front of the inspection committee three times – on the pavement, on the triangle and on the lunge line – he was in great shape. In the evenings he was satisfied in his box; he ate properly and was totally relaxed.”
It sounds as if with Equine 74 Gastric you have found the right supplement for your horses.
“We are very happy with the product. Its effectiveness with both Lenny Kravitz and Alsandair has convinced us. So now we feed it to all our sport horses. From the Grand Prix star to the four-year-old youngster. Because we think it is good for our horses. Each individual horse performs according to his level of training – and they should all feel as comfortable as possible.”
