Hanoverian Stallion Winterprinz Passed Away

The Hanoverian licensed breeding stallion and FEI level dressage horse Winterprinz has passed away at age 21 on 29 November 2015. Winterprinz was owned and competed by American FEI rider Carolyn Adams.

Winterprinz died at his home in Pleasanton, California.

The black stallion was born 27 February 1994 and bred by renowned breeder Axel Windeler in Germany. He was by Warkant out of Windrose (by Weltmeyer x Sander x Duktus).

Originally named Windy's Ass, he won the 1994 German Foal Championships and was reserve champion at the 1994 European Foal Championships. He was licensed at the 1997 Hanoverian Stallion Licensing and completed his 100-day Stallion Performance Testing in Medingen in 1998, finishing 5th overall with 117.82 points. He won the dressage part with 127.45 points.

Winterprinz competed at six regional young horse shows in Germany in 1997 and 1998 under Hannes Baumgart round the time he sold to American Carolyn Adams.

The pair was highly successful on a national level, achieving "Horse of The Year" status in all levels into the FEI. Adams competed Winterprinz internationally at small tour level from 2005 till 2011. They performed at the CDI's in Pebble Beach, Rancho Murieta, and Estes Park. The peak in their career was definitely in 2011 when they contested the U.S. Dressage Championships and Pan American Games qualifier in Gladstone, NJ, and finished 13th in the Kur to music (68.20%). In 2012 they made the transition to Grand Prix level on a national level and did their last show in August 2012 at Golden State Dressage.

Winterprinz has only two offspring registered as sport horse in Germany, but there are 199 get registered in the U.S.A. of which four are elite mares with the American Hanoverian society.

"Winterprinz was truly a horse of a lifetime and we're so fortunate to have experienced his gentle, willing nature, while still having some of his sons at home and his legacy and genetics preserved at UC Davis," said Adams.
