Australian team rider Maree Tomkinson has overcome a strong field to win the Grand Prix at the CDI Boneo on 22 January 2016, an important event for Rio Olympic hopefuls. Partnering with her World Equestrian Games horse, Diamantina (by Diamond Hit x Carprilli), Tomkinson was the standout of the day, winning the class with a convincing 70.120%.
The next nearest competitor was sole international entry, New Zealand’s Julie Brougham (Vom Feinsten) who scored 68.720%.
Tomkinson said it was good to be competing outdoors and in conditions which favoured her horse. “She’s a lot better and much happier outside. We’re incredibly lucky to be competing outside because normally at this event we are inside. Outdoors and in big arenas, that is where she shines,” said Tomkinson.
The CDI Boneo is an opportunity for Australian based dressage riders to obtain qualifying scores which may count towards Rio nomination. The event has attracted a who’s who of Australian dressage riders who are eager to secure a position on Australia’s four member team at the Olympic Games which are now less than 200 days away.
New Zealand's Rio hopeful Julie Brougham and Vom Feinsten placed second in the CDI Grand Prix at Boneo Park and secured their third Olympic qualifying score to contribute to their Rio selection. Julie was thrilled with the way her sometimes over energetic horse handled the test.
"Steins was wonderful - on springs and listening to me all the way. A couple of small mistakes but very fluent overall," said Brougham. "The crowd went silent! He felt amazing - he 'calmly' took me - super trot half passes and extensions, all the 'p's were great. Glad to have that one out of the way."
Four-time Olympian Mary Hanna brought two horses to the event and they finished third and fourth. Her more experienced horse Umbro received a score of 68.220% while her Grand Prix newcomer Boogie Woogie was awarded 67.720%. Having won the Pacific League World Cup Final in December, Hanna will soon travel to Europe to compete in the 2016 World Cup Final.
For Australian Olympic team nomination a short list of eight horse and rider combinations will battle it out at two European nomination events in a bid to secure one of four Australian team positions. This list of eight will be selected in April and will be determined by calculating an average of each eligible combination’s best two results from the Grand Prix at CDI-Ws, CDI3*, 4* or 5* events during the period 22 September to 10 April 2016. With riders located around the globe including Australia, Europe and the US, competition for these coveted positions is sure to be fierce.
