Zoutendijk and Meulendijks Win Fifth Leg of 2015-2016 KNHS Junior-Young Riders Cup in Almelo

2015-2016 KNHS Junior-Young Riders Cup

Junior rider Lisanne Zoutendijk and young rider Lotte Meulendijks became the winners of the fifth leg of the 2016 KNHS Junior-Young Riders cup, the official Dutch show circuit for youth riders which count for the squad selection. The fifth leg was held in Almelo, The Netherlands, on Saturday 23 April 2016, but as the Finals are rapidly approaching the field of competitors gets smaller at each leg.

In the junior division Lisanne Zoutendijk and Ringo Star (by Riccione) retrieved the winning feeling and aced the class with 70.99%. They edged out Esmee Donkers on her new ride Chaina (by Sir Donnerhall), who was right on Zoutendijk's heels with 70.63%. Mercedes Verweij and the black mare Wiolita (by San Remo) were third with 70.18%.

Judge Monica Drohm praised Zoutendijk for her "professional ride on Ringo Star. I gave 8s for the turn on the haunches, changes and rein back." Donkers and Chaina are "a combination with much potential. The silhouette is nices and the voltes were very beautiful." Verweij could have earned more points if "she would keep her horse a bit more uphill. Now Wiolita stays tight in the neck. If she can fix this she'll get 20 points more."

In the young riders division Lotte Meulendijks and her 20-year old Dutch warmblood Ohio (by Indoctro) were the only ones to crack the 70% barrier. They won the class with 70.13% and had second placed Thalia Rocks on her father Johan's Grand Prix horse Verdi de la Fazenda (by Florett As) well behind them. Rocks posted a score of 68.73% and referred Carlijn Huberts on the Dutch bred Romeo (by Jazz) to third place with 66.75%.

"The image is fresh and fun to watch," judge Drohm said about Meulendijks and Ohio. "Lotte rode a very solid test." Monica liked Verdi de la Fazenda. "This horse has so much expression in his legs but he was a bit tense and the contact was not so nice." Huberts still had a few mistakes, like "a loss of rhythm in the trot extension. Even though Carlijn couldn't get rid of the tension, she kept on riding well."
