According to Jan Bastrup Pedersen, Denmark is one of the prime countries in Europe for horse shopping. With its modern breeding programme that combines the best bloodlines from Germany, Holland and Scandinavia, Denmark has a stunning horse stock collection from foals to well trained Grand Prix prospects which he shares with his clients.
Bastrup Pedersen is a former Danish Junior and Young Rider team member who has competed at the Nordic Baltic and European Championships. The now 35-year old Dane has his own sales and training facility "Bastrup Dressage Horses" in Hobro, Denmark and has built up an impressive network of breeders, trainers and horse owners, with whom he works together and can source horses for his clients' every need.
"Denmark has a long tradition of horse breeding as well as horse training. Many of our dressage horses has tree good outstanding gaits and a great temperament, which suit many riders," said Bastrup Pedersen. "Furthermore, our Danish Warmblood breeding society has high standards selecting our premium mares and breeding stallions. This allows our breeders only using top quality breeding horses. The last 25 years our stallion owners in Denmark have invested in some of the best breeding stallions from Germany and Holland, so much offspring in Denmark have international bloodlines."
At his own stable in Jutland, Bastrup has a nice collection of quality dressage horses, which have all been exclusively selected for their movements, confirmation, temperament and breeding. They are carefully examined, both clinically as well as x-rayed, before they are offered for sale. Depending on the clients' requests, Jan will organize horse shopping trips around Denmark for amateur riders and professionals, whether they need a foal, a stallion prospect, a young diamond in the rough, or an upper level trained and competed dressage horse.
"I will take clients on a trip around an area in Denmark to a list of pre-selected horses based on the client's wishes," Bastrup told Eurodressage. "I present a selection of 8-12 horses per day to the client and normally we spend 2 to 3 days driving around to test and see the horses. Everything is totally transparent between the buyer and the seller and I will ensure that the transaction is made directly between the two parties. There are no hidden commission fees. I will also assist them during the vetting if that is preferred."
Clients can also keep their horses in training with Jan or have foals and youngsters reared at his yard or professional rearing yards ."We work together with breeders who have large breeding facilties for young stock with plenty of turnout for a happy horsey life," he explained.
Many dressage riders, who have shopped in Europe before, are tired spending hours in the car being dragged from one country to the other on an endless quest to find the perfect match. Denmark is an amazing horse breeders' country that combines the best European bloodlines and it offers all flavours of dressage horses.
"Denmark is very easy to acces via international airports. We have fast and good infra structure which makes it possible to visit all the stables and training centers in Denmark efficiently," he added.
With over 25 years of experience in dressage horses and 15 years in international horse dealing, Jan believes he stands out with his skills in matching the right horse to the rider instead of pushing and promoting for the most expensive sale.
"The most important for a successful transaction is that the client likes the horse they picked as their favorite, and not my own," said Jan. "I do not try to convince people to buy a certain horse. I have a big network and the ability to make a good selection of horses matching the client's wishes."
Jan's professionalism as an agent for horse shopping and eye for good horses s proven by his impressive list of references. He has discovered and sold as youngsters Sille Engermann's 2014 Danish Junior Riders Champion's horse Darius, Danish international Under 25 horse Donnerfee (Nicoline Graff), Sanne Hennigsen's international Grand Prix horse Capong, 2014 World Young Horse Championship participant Don Miro, and American GP rider Caroline Roffmann's small tour champion Pie amongst many others.
