Isabell Werth and the Belgian owned QC Flamboyant became the winners of the 2017 Nurnberger Burgpokal Finals, the German Championships for Developing Prix St Georges horses, which are held annually at the CDI Frankfurt. The 2017 Finals took place on Saturday 16 December 2017 and featured 12 combinations.
Werth and Patrick d'Eer's 9-year old Oldenburg gelding QC Flamboyant (by Fidertanz x De Niro) were already the winners in the warm up round on Friday and consolidated that number one position in the Finals on Saturday with a 77.780% score. Judges Evi Eisenhardt, Peter Holler, Katrina Wüst, Dieter Schüle and Dietrich Plewa believed that the dark bay gelding is the best rising small tour horse in Germany this year. Three judges on the short side placed the duo first, Eisenhardt had them scecond and Plewa even fourth. Werth's scores ranged from 74.634% to a whopping 80.976%!
Werth’s victory was certainly not undisputed. Although Flamboyant impressed with his trot half passes and overall faultfree test, he was not always steady in the contact and showed his tongue before the tempi changes. One half pirouette was also slightly large. Nevertheless the judges liked what they saw and rewarded Isabell with her fourth Burgpokal title.
Right on Werth's heels were Hubertus Schmidt and Equus Invest's 8-year old Westfalian stallion Escolar (by Estobar x Furst Piccolo). The stallion stood out with his willingness to work and steady position of the head. Two small booboos kept them from the victory as the horse twice changed behind after the canter extensions. The judges on the long side placed this duo first, but the ones on the short side had them in second and third position. With a 77.195% total score Schmidt was right behind Werth. The audience booed as they had preferred Escolar to win.
Isabell's former assistant trainer Matthias Bouten steered Maja Wieczorek's 8-year old Hanoverian stallion Quantum Vis MW (by Quaterback x Gloster) to a third place with 76.341%
