Following a difficult battle, the prophet Mohamed let his exhausted and hungry horses free in the desert in order to let them find the nearest river or watering hole so that they could drink. However, before the horses made it to water, a new attack threatened Mohamed and he was forced to call hid horses back to him. But only five mares listened to his call, and turned around to fulfill their duty, without having quenched their thirst, to serve their master.
After that, Mohamed blessed the mares, and laid is thumb on each of the horse’s necks to mark them, on that spot, a swirl developed in the hair. Legend says that Mohamed founded the Arabian stud book with these five mares and put a lot of emphasis on keeping the breed pure. The saying, which is still known to this day, „the thumb print of the prophet“ is used to describe horses with a swirl in their coat, and are considered to be particularly pure and precious.
The Arabian breed has a long history steeped in the traditions of maintaining pureness particularly in Jordan, the guest country of Horses & Dreams in 2018. In many ancient texts and in the Koran readers can still find passages referring to the origins of the Arabian horse breed. The ambassador for Horses & Dreams meets the Royal Kingdom of Jordan is Her Royal Highness Princess Alia Bint Al Hussein, who has always looked to develop and grow the Jordanian Arabian Stud book. In doing so, she is not only continuing the long tradition of her home country, but also of her own family. The royal family of Jordan has a long and deep rooted traditions with horses and equestrian sports.
This precious breed will be presented at Horses & Dreams meets the Royal Kingdom of Jordan by the Ismer Arabian Stud, where National, European, and World champion Arabians as well as first class riding horses are at home. These, and much more will be presented at the gala show ”The Magic of Arabia” presented by TV Hören und Sehen on Saturday evening. The stud will present mares and foals as well as stallions under the title “The Magic of Arabia”, and help to present the story of the founding of the Arabian breed.
With over than 60 broodmares and 15 breeding stallions, the Ismer Stud is the largest private Arabian Stud in Europe. The stud was founded at the end of the 1950’s by Rolf Ismer, with his first purchase of Arabian broodmares. His son Holger Ismer ran the stud for over 40 years and helped develop it to its current size. At this point the stud is being run by the third generation, Dr. Nils Ismer. For years, the breeding program has been run on philosophical principles: “The love of the beauty of the Arabian breed, combined with toughness and readiness to perform, this is the basis for our breeding. We measure their quality on strength of character, nobility, and correctness.”
Countless victories at national and international competitions and races prove that this particular breeding philosophy combined with the specific rearing conditions at the Stud is a recipe for success.
Daily turnout is used to strengthen the heart, lungs, and movement systems this an important part of the rearing of strong and healthy foals as well as optimal feeding and additional movement opportunities.
Another important piece of the breeding work at the Ismer Stud is the training of young horses. With two indoor arenas, covered hippodrome, three outdoor arenas, as well as a large track and cross country course, and the constant attention of professional trainers, the stud offers the perfect environment to produce success.
The focus of the training program is to development individual talent, and be sure that a training program fits each horse perfectly in order to allow for the optimal long term performance of each horse in either sport or show.
