Belgian Grand Prix rider Jeroen Devroe got severely injured in a riding accident at home on 4 September 2019 and was hospitalized for six days.

One day before Marlies van Baalen and Dorothee Schneider both ended up in the hospital after a riding accident, Jeroen Devroe experienced the same unfortunate fate.

During a training session on a youngster at home in Nieuwrode, Belgium, Devroe fell off his horse and had to be transported to the hospital. He was diagnosed with six broken ribs - three of them fractured in two places - as well as a lung bruise and a minor case of pneumothorax.

Because of the collapsed lung, the 11-time Belgian Grand Prix champion had to stay in the intensive care unit for two days. He spent six days in total in the hospital to get the pain under control with medication.

The 49-year old Devroe has returned home and needs to take it easy for two months.

"I'm already teaching again and I'm not supposed to ride for 8 weeks, but I think that I could ride sooner with the most experienced horses as long as I feel improvement," Devroe told Eurodressage. "Time will tell."
