Stables burnt out at Yeguada La Perla

Five horses perished in a fire that raged at the German owned Yeguada La Perla in Segovia, Spain, on 17 March 2020.

Yeguada La Perla is a Lusitano horse breeding farm, owned by German Leonie Buhlmann, who bought the property from the business from Spaniard Alberto Herranz.

In 2016 Herranz purchased half ownership of Claudio Castilla Ruiz' Spanish Olympic team horse Alcaide.  Alcaide is not stabled at La Perla, but resides with his rider in Somosaguas near Madrid, Spain.

"The day before yesterday some straw caught fire and suddenly extended to 16 boxes nearby. We fought to take the horses out, but two of them didn't make it and three others we had to euthanize with very severe burns," said Le Perla stable manager Leonie Bühlmann. "And we are still trying to save another one with lighter burns. It took about 10hours to extinguish the fire."

Spain is currently hit heavily by the Corona virus, counting 17,395 people infected and 803 deaths on 18 March

"Now we have to see how we can keep going,' said Buhlmann. "At the moment there are horses living on paddocks, in the riding arena, etc because we don't have boxes. We have to reconstruct a lot and to see how we will be able to return to normal life."
