On 20 November 2009 Gottfried Hoogen, a renowned breeder of Trakehners and founder of the famous Vogelsanghof Stud, passed away at the age of 89 following pneumonia. Gottfried Hoogen has been described as a "visionary" and was highly influential for the breeding of Trakehner and Rhinelander horses.

Hoogen was born on 15th May 1920 as the fifth child at the Hoogen-Hof in Saalhoff. He married Anna-Maria van Dornick on 24th June 1947 and they had five children together. He became the chairman of the Kleve regional equestrian society and board member of the breeding department of the German Equestrian Federation.

For many years Hoogen was president of the German Trakehner society and his influence on the promotion of the breed was enormous. He discovered Burnus AAH, the legendary sire Patron, bred Pasternak and Eligius. Other notorious stallions he either bred, discovered or stood at stud were Rembrandt, Mackensen, Mahagoni, Pasteur xx and Mephistopheles. He also leased the Holsteiner Lancer II from the Holsteiner Verband and allowed the stallion to stamp Rhinelander breeding.

Vogelsanghof is currently managed by Georg Hoogen and daughter-in-law Monika.
