The 25 breed societies in Germany have decided to allow only performance tested stallions to be registered in the Stud Book 1 as of the autumn of 2014. This was decided in a special meeting held at the German Equestrian Federation in Warendorf.
With this decision, the biggest warmblood breed societies in the world are finally stepping up to the plate and following the example of what many more modern organized studbooks, like the KWPN and Danish warmblood society, have been doing for years!
As of next autumn only stallions with a performance test result will be entered in the Studbook I (Hengstbuch I). Until now, newly licensed colts without a performance test are entered in Studbook I and their foals are also fully papered.
This is going to change when the 2014 licensings start. Foals only get full papers when the sire has completed at least a 30-day test. When a stallion has no HLP result or he could not participate in the testing because of illness or other reasons, their foals will get "white papers", which is a birth certificate.
This decision is a first important step forward for German warmblood horse breeding. Theo Leuchten, chair of the FN Breeding division, stated "we already urged breeders for a long time to use only performance tested stallions. Each breeder is responsible to get as much information about a stallion as possible. Those who will be breeding to young stallions with no performance test result will run the risk of not getting proper papers."
Leuchten stressed that stallion owners have to clearly inform the breeders on their website and stallion catalogs if their stallions successfully completed the performance test.
