The World Breeding Federation of Sport Horses has accepted the American Trakehner Association (ATA) as a new member at the 2019 WBFSH Annual General Meeting in Saumur, France, in October.

The ATA has a franchise agreement with the Trakehner Verband, covering North America. It is governed by its members through a democratic process, as described in the ATA's Corporate Regulations. They work collaboratively with the Verband with respect to the studbook rules but are not under the control of the Trakehner Verband. At the time of application, the ATA had 396 members.

The breeding goal of the ATA studbook is to breed a sound and correct riding and sport horse of Trakehner type with harmonious lines, with impulsive, ground- covering, elastic movements, a well-balanced temperament with a willingness to work.

There are 2,160 registered mares, but it is difficult to say the number of active mares, as many are “out-bred” to non-Trakehner stallions. There are 31 approved and active stallions. The ATA has registered 15,124 horses since its inception. The annual average number of foals per year registered between 2014 to 2018 is 70. Foals are DNA tested to verify parentage.

The ATA studbook is closed to all breeds except those descended entirely from Trakehner, Thoroughbred, Arabian, Anglo-Arabian, and Shagya-Arabian horses. Upon the recommendation of the Department of Development Department the WBFSH board agreed to grant membership to the ATA studbook.

This will be due for ratification at the GA- 2020.
