It is the first time this 2009 show season that so many German A-team riders have gathered at the same show. Last year's hopeful for the team, Mattias Alexander Rath, placed first with Sterntaler (by Sion) in the Grand Prix for Special at the CDI Dortmund with a score of 75.66%. Isabell Werth saddled her number two, Warum Nicht, to finish second with little over one percent less than the winner, 74.38%. Austrian Victoria Max-Theurer brought her power house horse Augustin OLD (by August der Starke) to land third place. Augustin is one of those special horses that will blow you out of your socks now and definitely in the future once he's more established at Grand Prix. For the first time in her life, Victoria Max-Theurer has been coached by another trainer than her mother Sissy and especially her father Hans Max. Before Dortmund, Victoria went on a training week at Jonny Hilberathto get some fresh insights in dressage and to prepare her horses for this show. Olympians HeikeKemmer lacked show routine and placed sixth on Bonaparte and Nadine Capellmann ranked tenth on her number one horse Elvis VA. View Photo Report

The 24-year old German rider Mattias Alexander Rath won the Grand Prix Special at the CDI Dortmund. Aboard his stepmother Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff's Sterntaler Unicef, Rath scored 75,66% to win the class. Rath spent the past eight month on his business management studies and made his show come back in Dortmund. By winning the Special, Rath claimed a huge purse of 12,500 euro sponsored by Meggle. "It's a great feeling to win here in Dortmund against such strong competitors," Rath said. "We had a long break from showing and used it to work on many things, to be more secure in the test." The young Mattias Alexander has two trainers, his father Klaus-Martin Rath at home and Klaus Balkenhol. "I think it's not only an advantage [to have two trainers] for my own development as a rider, but also for the horses. It's very important to learn new things."
Isabell Werth and Warum Nicht FRH finished on a very unusual second place after several small mistakes. In the trot tour, the huge chestnut Hanoverian broke into canter twice. "During the winter I have been riding a lot of World Cup tests and the Freestyle and hadn't focused seriously on the Special, Werth admitted. "While I was riding, I looked on the score board and saw that my average was 67%. Then I thought, 'Ok I'll have to add a notch to that."
The Danish Nathalie Zu Saeyn-Wittgenstein is on a rise with her 13-year old Danish warmblood Rigoletto (by Rubinstein). "Usually Rigoletto sees ghosts in the ring, but today he was really good and completed the test with great ease. I'm very proud of him," said Zu Saeyn. View Photo Report
