The highly popular Westfalian breeding stallion recently underwent a small surgical procedure to prevent him from getting an ingenuinal hernia. Because the veterinary team of owner Nijhoff was so prompt in diagnosing the issue Florencio was able to remain intact and he is now back on  breeding duty.

Inguinal hernia often occurs with breeding stallions and it regularly results in castration. In Florencio's case a prompt operation saved the stallion's breeding career.

"Florencio has a small inguinal hernia, but because we noticed it straight away, they only had to push the intestines back and he didn't need surgery," said owner Jeannette Nijhoff. "Vet Hans Wildriaans was able to close the inguinal canal laproscopically. Both testicles were spared and the sperm quality is super."

Nijhoff recommeds stallion owners to check whether each of their stallions has a wide inguinal ring. "It can be narrowed with a small operation so a hernia will never happen," she added.

The 13-year old Westfalian licensed stallion Florencio (by Florestan x Weltmeyer x Pik Bube II) is the double young horse World Champion and became extremely popular as a breeding stallion first in Germany. He is now celebrating his hay days for Dutch breeding after his sons Charmeur and Borencio became Pavo Cup champions and were highly acclaimed at the World Young Horse Championships themselves.
