Isabell Werth's retired Grand Prix horse and 2007 World Cup Finals winner Warum Nicht has passed away after suffering from a severe colic attack. The horse was 19 years old.

The horse was retired from competition sport three years ago after he fractured his pelvis in June 2012. He did not recover sufficiently to make a  come back to sport. The chestnut spent his retirement in the field at Werth's yard in Rheinberg, Germany.

"I can hardmy believe it, even though it happened already a few days ago," Isabell Werth explained. "I just couldn't announce the sad news straight away and didn't want to be addressed at the show about it. It all went so incredibly fast. Hannes was in super shape and suddenly he developed signs of colic. We tried everything, even an operation. During the operation it became clear that he could not be saved and we euthanized him while he was still under narcosis. I had wished many more years for him, but it wasn't meant to be."

Warum Nicht FRH was bred by Hinrich Lüssen and owned by Madeleine Winter-Schulze. He was is by Weltmeyer x Wenzel x Mon Cherie. Hannes
Baumgart started the chestnut as a four year old and the horse twice
competed at the Bundeschampionate. Dr. Uwe Schulten-Baumer acquired him for Werth in 2003 and Winter-Schulze took over the ownership when Werth became sponsored by Madeleine.

The duo was highly successful in the dressage ring and Warum Nicht became one of the top earning dressage horses in the world. Werth began competing him at international Grand Prix level in April 2006 and won numerous World Cup qualifiers with him as well as international dressage competitions such as the 4* tour at the 2010 CDIO Aachen. Their career highlights include winning the 2007 World Cup Finals in Las Vegas and team bronze at the 2010 World Equestrian Games. Their last international was in Mannheim in May 2012.
