Westfalian Breeding News

The Westfalian licensed stallion Florencio passed away today 4 May 2017 due to cardiac arrest at his owner's place Jeannete Nijhof's stallion station in The Netherlands.

The bay stallion Florencio was top fit and had just done his daily covering. He was relaxing in the stallion paddock when he died from cardiac arrest.

Florencio was born in 1999 and bred by Susanne Sanal. The matter of his ownership has always been quite opaque throughout the years. The stallion has been listed as (co-)owned by Eugene Reesink, Ludwig Kathmann, Henk Nijhof, and the Bosch brothers. Briefly Paul Schockemohle was in the mix but he never finalized obtaining a share in the stallion.

Florencio was by Florestan out of Walessa (by Weltmeyer x Pik Bube II). He was first licensed in January 2003 with the Oldenburg society, and three months later with the Hanoverian society, but he had already competed his 30-day stallion performance testing in Zweibrucken in November 2002 and scored 9.25 for dressage and 8.31 for show jumping, finishing second overall out of 11 participating stallions. He was initially rejected by the KWPN society as a young colt, but later on approved after his successes in sport. Last year Florencio was proclaimed Keur stallion by the KWPN society.

Florencio began his sport career as a 4-year old under Simon Drop and became the reserve champion at the 2003 Bundeschampionate. In 2004 Dutch Hans Peter Minderhoud took over the ride and caused a sensation when he won the World Young Horse Championships in Verden, Germany, with sky high marks for the horse's outstanding basic gaits. They won the Pavo Cup Finals a few weeks later. Minderhoud renewed the World Champion's title in 2005. For a few years, Florencio disappeared from the international radar but returned to the CDI ring in 2009 and competed at small tour level in Aachen and Rotterdam. The horse never made the transition to Grand Prix but was retired from sport to focus on his busy breeding career.

Florencio has sired no less than 44 licensed sons, including Charmeur, Aaron, Fackeltanz, Florenciano, Florenz, Floricello, Fontane, Floriscount, Furst Nymphenburg I and II, and Luxus CML. He sired 54 state premium mares.

His most successful offspring in sport are Fackeltanz (Dorothee Schneider), Aaron (Jeroen Devroe), Charmeur (Madeleine Witte-Vrees), Florenciano (Hubertus Schmidt), Fido Dido (Petra van Es), Fraulein Auguste (Matthias Bouten) and Freak Blue Phanton (Kristine Moller) amongst others.
