Karen Trotter became the recipient of an Honorary Life Membership for 2016 at Equestrian Sport New Zealand's 65th General Assembly, held on Wednesday 28 September 2016 at the West Plaza Hotel in Wellington.

The Honorary Life Membership is granted in recognition and appreciation of outstanding service by a person for the benefit of ESNZ or equestrian sport in New Zealand.

Karen’s formal association with ESNZ and Dressage began in 2003 when she was appointed as Chair of Dressage, which also gave her a sit on the ESNZ Board.  Karen stepped down from her role as Chair of Dressage at the end of June after 13 years of service to the sport.

During her 13 year association with Dressage and ESNZ, Karen has been involved with many aspects of the sport alongside her Board governance roles.  In 2007, prior to the appointment of Jim Ellis, Karen did a short stint as Chief Executive for ESNZ and in November 2014 attended an FEI Group 8 meeting in Dubai (called and paid for by Princess Haya) with Chris Hodson where potential changes to the FEI rules and regulations were discussed.

Karen also served on the ESNZ Board’s Audit, Finance and Risk Committee, Appointments and Remuneration Committee and other ad hoc committees as required.

On the Dressage side of things, in 2012 Karen and her husband Peter donated the Trotter Trophy which is awarded at the National Dressage Championships each year to the Intermediate II Champion. Most recently at the Dressage AGM back in June, Karen was awarded the Kaye Fissenden Memorial Trophy for her outstanding contribution to dressage.
