The 5-year old First Step Valentin, the 6-year old Laura Ashley and the 7-year old Favian WH were the winners at the fifth Belgian qualifier for team selection for the 2017 World Championships for Young Dressage Horses in Ermelo, The Netherlands on 3 - 6 August 2017. The fifth qualifier was held in Schilde, Belgium on 27 May 2017.

Since the fourth qualifier, the field of competitors has been getting smaller with each further show as the ranking has already become quite clear about who the real contenders are for an Ermelo borth. Two more qualifiers will be held in Meerdonk (11 June) and Cheratte (25 June) before the official team is announced.

The 5-year old division in Schilde was won by Larissa Pauluis and her SBS approved Westfalian stallin First Step Valentin (by Vitalis x Fidermark). The pair scored 76.583 for the victory and booked their fourth, consecutive victory in the series. Katrin Verreet and her home bred Belgian warmblood mare Miss Furstenball (by Furstenball x Ritmeister) were second with 74.625, followed by Philippe Jorissen on the Belgian warmblood mare Miss Dior van den Bruel (by Special Agent Amour x Florestan) on 73.083.

A new winner came to the fore in the 6-year old division in Schilde. Gert Helsen steered the Belgian warmblood mare Laura Ashley (by Bon Bravour x Sandro Hit) to first place on a score of 73.250 and edged out Brecht d'Hoore on Dominique van der Horst's KWPN stallion Go on Top MP (by Danone I x Welt Hit II) who finished second with 72.958. Ine Vandecappelle and the Dutch warmblood gelding Generaal (by Oscar x Negro) slotted in third with 71.667.

In the 7-year old division Brecht D'Hoore was back on top aboard the Korean owned Dutch warmblood Favian WH (by Zizi Top x Roman Nature) with 76.011, while Tom Franckx and the German bred stallion Showdancer (by Stedinger x Donnerhall) were the runners-up on 73.729%. Larissa Pauluis and the licensed stallion Barroso (by Bordeaux x Saros xx) finished third with 73.518

In the provisional ranking for Ermelo so far, the two highest scoring 5-year olds are First Step Valentin and Miss Furstenball; for the 6-year olds it is are Go On Top and Laura Ashley and for the 7-year olds Favian WH and Barroso (see provisional ranking here).
