Irish dressage rider Anna Merveldt had to cancel her second World Cup start on Esporim at the 2020 CDI-W Amsterdam last week as she fractured her arm on Tuesday 21 January 2020 right before departing to the show.

After riding at the 2019 CDI-W Salzburg in December, Merveldt was in Amsterdam to contest the World Cup qualifier there aboard the 11-year old Lusitano bred Esporim (by Pagao x Quiaz), who is owned by Italians Maria Greco and Giovanna Mazza in partnership with Eleonore and Michael Higgins.

However, the entry had to be cancelled as Merveldt fractured her arm. Anna slipped coming down a narrow wooden staircase and broke her arm when training at Johann Hinnemann’s before she was due to head to Amsterdam.

She was immediately treated but an operation to stabilize the bone is scheduled for this week.

Merveldt told Eurodressage the fracture is "nothing serious, back in the saddle very soon."

The Irish dressage team wrote history last year at the Europeans in Rotterdam by securing a team spot for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Merveldt is one of several riders in the running for one of three places on the Irish team.

Merveldt is based in Italy.
