Italian Under 25 team rider Serena Fumagalli got severely injured in a horse accident yesterday 26 May 2020.

How the accident happened remains a mystery.  When Fumagalli did not return from taking a horse out to the field, her trainer Vittoria Prandoni went looking for her and discovered Serena knocked out on the ground with severe injuries to her face.

Fumagalli was immediately transported to the hospital where she was diagnosed with a broken nose, and fractures to the occipital bone, orbit and mandible.

Yesterday, Fumagalli was operated on for eight hours to stabilize the fractures, as well as to rebuild the structure and shape of her face.

The operation was a success, but Serena will have to remain in the hospital for the week. She has no recollection of what happened.

The 25-year old Fumagalli began competing internationally at Under 25 level in 2018 aboard the 14-year old Dutch warmblood gelding Black Panter (by Painted Black x Landeur). She represented Italy at the 2019 European Under 25 Championships in San Giovanni in Marignano and finished 27th in the Short Grand Prix.
