The KWPN society has announced that the late Keur stallion Apache has been proclaimed a "preferent" sire. This is the highest distinction a Dutch warmblood breeding stallion can procure.

Apache was a Dutch warmblood licensed stallion by UB40 out of Tolanda (by Krack C).

He was bred by Tonnie van der Koppel and owned by Ad Valk. He succumbed to laminitis in September 2019, half a year after he was proclaimed Keur stallion.

Success in Breeding and Sport

Apache was the reserve champion at the 2008 KWPN Stallion Licensing. He completed his stallion performance testing in the autumn of 2008 with 78 points.

Apache's first rider was Yvonne Copal who steered him as a 4-year old to a 10th place in the 2009 Pavo Cup.

In September 2009 Emmelie Scholtens received the ride on the stallion. They won the 2012 KWPN Stallion Competition and the pair became the 2012 Dutch Small Tour Champions. They were members of the Dutch team at the 2018 World Equestrian Games and placed 8th at the 2019 World Cup Finals in Gothenburg. They won bronze at the 2019 Dutch Grand Prix Championship.

Preferent

Apache's offspring is now proven itself in sport at the highest level, which is necessary to be considered for "preferent" status. For the preferent status, the oldest offspring has to be 11 years of age, there has to be a positive verdict at the inspections of his offspring in sport and breeding and the stallion needs to have a sport index of 140 points, with a reliability of at least 85%.

His oldest offspring has reached Grand Prix level, including Gio (Charlotte Dujardin), Gaudi Vita (Joyce Heuitink), Ferrari (Jeanine Nekeman), Flanell (Veronique Roerink/Semmieke Rothenberger), and Hot Chocolate (Esmee van Gijtenbeek). His son Jovian is the 2019 World Young Horse Champion.

Apache sired six licensed offspring: Cum Laude, Grand Galaxy Win, Hometown, Indian Rock, Improver VDT and Intro K. Apache is also grandsire to the licensed Lennox U.S., Ladignac and Lewis.

Apache has 249 of his daughters registered with the KWP of which 71% have the ster predicate or higher. His breeding value is 154 points with a reliability of 95%. .

"Eager to Work"

"Apache was a very special horse to us all," said Emmelie Scholtens. "This was for Ad and Annemiek (Valk), but also for Jeroen (Witte) and I. The entire road we travelled was very unique. it's a pity he's no longer here, but of course wonderful that he's proclaimed preferent. I recognize a lot of Apache in his offspring, especially in their intelligence. His offspring is clearly smarter than other horses. He did Grand Prix and it's nice to see his children do it too, living up to the expectations in breeding. That's because of his eagerness to work, while many people though he was a difficult horse. He was very stalliony, but also very willing and he passes that on."
