The international FEI dressage pony, who has competed for Denmark and Sweden, has passed away on 6 December 2021. He was 25 years old.
Moelgarnedd Montana was a 1996 born section B Welsh pony stallion by Eyarth Tomahawk out of Moelgarnedd Miri (by Brockwell Chuckle x Downland Cognac).
He was bred and raised by David Williams at Moelgarnedd stud in the U.K., then moved to The Netherlands, and in 2001 imported to Sweden. The 134 cm standing liver chestnut was licensed as a breeding stallion.
FEI Pony for Sweden and Denmark
Montana made his international break through in sport in 2009 under Swedish Anna Drugge. He returned to the CDI ring three years later with new owner and rider Emma Tegelskar, who represented Sweden at the 2012 CDI Falsterbo.
In the winter of 2012-2013 he moved to Denmark and became the schoolmaster for future Danish team rider Sara Aagaard Hyrm. With Hyrm he made his show debut in January 2013 and they competed at national level in Denmark for two years. They were third in the finals of the 2013 Danish Pony Championships for category 2 (smaller FEI) ponies and were third in the 2013 Ecco Cup finals.
In 2017 he returned to Sweden to continue his career under Hannah Regosa. The pair twice represented Sweden at the 2017 and 2018 Nordic Baltic Championships. They won the 2018 Swedish Pony Championships.
His last recorded owner was Therése Karlsson and his last rider was Tilde Lantz who took over the pony in 2019. At the 2020 Swedish Pony Championships they finished eighth overall. Montana was 24 at that time and did his last Championships.
Career starter
The tiny pocket rocket that Montana was gave pleasure to numerous starting dressage riders.
"He was something completely unique for my entire development with horses. He is something special and has given an incredible number of girls indescribable memories," said Hyrm.
