Eighty-Four Colts Selected for the 2026 KWPN Stallion Licensing

After five days of pre-selection, the KWPN stallion licensing committee has selected and invited 84 colts to the 2026 KWPN Licensing in 's Hertogenbosch in February.

The pre-selection took place in Ermelo on 9 - 13 December

The licensing committee was chaired by Bart Bax, assisted by Emmelie Scholtens and Wouter Plaizier. Brand new committee member Scholtens had to leave the judges' table on several occasions due to a conflict of interest (as (co)-owner of colts or colts presented by her husband Jeroen Witte). She was then replaced by Belgian Brecht d'Hoore.

Five Days

On the first day offspring by German stallions was presented and 11 were selection for the second phase in 's Hertogenbosch. One of them was, for instance, Vamos Junior (by Vitalis), the full brother of international Grand Prix horse Vamos Amigos (Cathrine Dufour, Annabella Pidgley). One older stallion, 5-year old Power Edition KSH (by Livius) was also accepted, but he'll have to perform under saddle in the KWPN Stallion Competition first to get a final ticket to Den Bosch.

On day two 18 colts received a positive verdict. Sires Jovian, Dream Boy, Dutch Dream, Easy Game and Desperado each got two sons accepted for the next round.

On day three 18 colts passed. Sires Toto Jr, Las Vegas, Hermès and Indian Rock presented several offspring, but only Toto Jr did really well with five sons selected. Prominent show stallion Las Vegas and Indian Rock, who despite their age do not have a single licensed son with the KWPN society so far, saw 2 and 1 son move to the second round. Hermes also had one son accepted for Den Bosch.

On day four only 11 stallions made the cut, including two sons of Le Formidable and Blue Hors Santiano.

On day five another 25 colts got selected, bringing the overal total to 84 colts with only the late pre-selection day on 23 December for the absentees from the pre-selection as final moment to get selected.

Extreme U.S. Most Successful

The most "successful" sire of the pre-selection was Extreme U.S. (by Escamillo xVivaldi x Don Schufro ). He was KWPN's most popular dressage sire in 2022, covering the largest amount of mares. In 2023 no less than 416 KWPN registered foals by Exteme U.S. were born and 199 of them were colts.

Fifteen of those colts were entered for the pre-selection and 14 actually showed up. The committee selected seven for the licensing in February.

Horses.nl's Rick Helmink wrote a highly commendable, very detailed report about the pre-selection days. The Dutch reporter wrote about the Extreme offspring: "Extreme made a better impression than his German-approved Escamillo half-brothers (Escanto PS, Escaneno, Expectation Ps) who presented their offspring earlier this week (often somewhat cold and slow horses) and it probably helps that Extreme, through his dam's sire Vivaldi (and thus Jazz), produces somewhat sharper horses."

Helmink described the offspring as "aguile, cooperative horses that did what was expected of them. Less positive is the neck, which on several occasions did not attach nicely on the shoulder/withers (dip in front of the withers, sometimes slightly deep in the chest, slightly too vertical), but you could say the same about Extreme himself. Sometimes the walk was not convincing, but that is difficult to judge in Ermelo; the canter stood out positively (generally balanced in canter)."
