Renowned German young horse rider, trainer and dealer Josef "Jupp" Haane passed away on 27 June 2026. He was 92 years old.
Born on 18 June 1934 Haane was from Dorsten-Lembeck in Westfalia and grew up with an innate love for horses. At the age of 22 he received an education in agriculture from a Jewish family and became a farmer.
Young Horse Rider
As of the 1970s he became known as a successful young horse rider and trainer, competing youngsters at local, regional and national level.
He built a name for himself as a winner particularly in the material classes (riding horse tests) with a recorded 130 victories over the years.
His first recorded results with the German equestrian federation date back to 1976 when he competed Charmeur (by Cid x Wohler), Maringo (by Marengo x Korenbleem xx) and Rievera (by Romadour II x Lucius) in the riding horse tests. In the FN database he is listed as the rider of 65 different horses.
His last competition year was in 1993 when Jupp was 59 years old. His last show horses were Lemon Tree (by Lemon Tree x Mozart) and Lennox (by Löwenstein x Adlerfels). The latter horse ended up selling to the U.S.A. and became Robert Dover's 1998 WEG and 1999 World Cup Finals ride.
Horse Scout

As a horse scout he discovered, bought and sold a 3-year old Rembrandt from breeder De Baey. The horse later became double Olympic champion under Nicole Uphoff. A 13-year old Nicole bought Rembrandt in 1980 after a try-out. She was joined by her father Jurgen and her coach at the time, Antonius Holland.
Haane discovered a plethora of young horses that ended up garnering great national and international successes for their future riders. He discovered young horses such as Suppenkasper (by Spielberg x Krack C --- Steffen Peters), Douglas Dorsey (by Donnerhall x -- Wlfried and Laura Bechtolsheimer), Rue Pyrosch (by Rhythmus x Pluchino xx -- Susanne Lebek), Giorgio S (by Glückslee x Lucino --- Wolfgang Schierloh), Pascal (by Paradox x Dragon --- Gabriele Disterer (née Tempelmann), Rabauke (by Rhythmus x Perseus ---- Nicole Casper), Renoir (by Romadour II x Frundsberg ---- Andrea John), Rhythmus (by Romadour II x Lucius xx --- Muriel Leonardi), and Franklin (by Frühlingsball x Dirigent --- Marcus Tecklenborg). From his barb successful youth riders horses came such as Playboy (by Palton x Buchara xx --- Merle Kästner) and Gallipo (by Gagne Beaucoup x Salut --- Bettina Wienfort (née Grasekamp)).
Another horse he discovered was Walzerkönig (by Watzmann x Absatz), who ended up becoming a world class show jumper under Franke Sloothaak.
Passing

Josef leaves behind his wife Inge and three children: Hans-Jurgen, Christof and Marie-Theres. Inge still lives on their small yard in Dorsten-Lembeck.
