Ireland's Anna Merveldt had a successful weekend at the World Cup dressage show at Marianske Lazne in the Czech Republic with James Connor's 12 year-old gelding Coryolano. The only Irish competitor, Merveldt showed some of her recent sparkling form when she placed second in Friday's Grand Prix, just behind Gina Capellmann-Lutkemeier, but on Saturday pulled out all the stops to win the Grand Prix Special on a score of 70.2. Canadian-born Merveldt, who moved to Ireland with her family as an infant, recently made dressage history with 'Coryolano' at the World Cup show in Lipica, Slovenia, when she and Judy Reynolds from Naas became the only Irish riders ever to win two classes at the same international event.

The 48-year-old Gina Capellmann Lutkemeier won her first World Cup Qualifier aboard her new Grand Prix horse Baldessarini W. Lutkemeier runs a private dressage stable in Paderborn. In 2002 and 2003, she competed at the World Cup final with Amando. The older sister of Nadine Capellmann is frequently in the spotlight with young, talented horses. She has especially dedicated herself to training her daughter Fabienne who won team gold at the 2007 European Junior Championships. Baldessarini is a daughter by Breitling W, the successful horse of Wolfram Wittig. Wittig is also the breeder of the nine-year-old mare. At the age of five and six, Baldessarini competed under Brigitte Wittig at the Bundeschampionate and also at the World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses in Verden.
