very interesting competition between Imke Schellekens-Bartels, Adelinde Cornelissen and Isabell Werth took place in the World Cup Qualifier in Mechelen. Not Cornelissen, neither Werth but Schellekens-Bartels reigned supreme on the Smarius family's 15-year old Hanoverian mare Sunrise. Schellekens scored 82.200% to win the class. "I'm very happy," she said," because I had planned on really giving it my all and it worked. Upon entering the ring I felt the right amount of tension to produce a spectacular kur."

Isabell Werth and Madeleine Winter-Schulze's huge Hanoverian gelding Warum Nicht FRH (by Weltmeyer) placed second on 81.65%. It was Werth's first competition since her FEI doping suspension and giving birth to her first son. Mechelen was also the setting for Werth's first confrontation with Adelinde Cornelissen since the 30-year Dutch girl won the individual gold medal at the 2009 European Championships in Windsor.

Cornelissen (and Gal) are currently considered the "unbeatable ones", but in Mechelen the cards were clearly reshuffled. Riding her brilliant Dutch warmblood gelding Parzival (by Jazz), Cornelissen started out very strongly in her freestyle scoring high for piaffe, passage and trot work. In the walk partParzival stuck out his tongue and he did not put it back in his mouth until after the final halt and salute. Sticking the tongue out is considered resistance in the submission and judged are forced to score each movement -2 when they see the tongue. However, a tremendous amount of confusion arose on the judges' panel as they had not seen Parzival stick his tongue out before. Dutch judge Jan Peeters seemed oblivious to the problem and still awarded the ride 73% on the technical level, while the other judges dropped to 63, 64 and 69%.

After her ride the level-headed Cornelissen commented the following to the KWPN press officer: "Such things can happen. It is what it is. Sticking out his tongue is by the way not a new problem. He does it when there is tension and then especially in the walk. It's a pity but not a disaster. Next time it'll be different."

Dutch born but Belgian based Jeannette Haazen finished third with her gigantic KWPN gelding Nartan (by Jazz). Riding to Latin inspired music, Haazen scored 77,85% to slot in third. "I don't think this is going to get me to the finals in Den Bosch," she told KWPN. "I have to be honest about it. We have too many strong Dutch combinations. But I won't quit and I keep trying."
