Esther Maruhn, sidelined with a fractured ankle, getting cuddles from Va'Pensiero

German professional dressage rider Esther Maruhn has sustained a fractured ankle in a riding accident, which kept her from riding at the Klosterhof Medingen stallion show in Bad Bevensen, on 26 January 2020.

Maruhn fell while mounting Va'Pensiero, her own and her life partner Hans Richelhagen's 3-year old stallion by Vitalis x Furstenball.  Klosterhof's in-house rider Hannah Laser substituted at the stallion show.

"It was an unfortunate situation," Maruhn told Eurodressage. "It happened when I wanted to jump on. I got stuck in the stirrup, when the horse took a step forward and I fell stupidly on the floor so that I broke my ankle and had a syndesmosis ligament tear."

Maruhn went to the hospital and was diagnosed with a fractured ankle, which was put in a cast.

Her foot and lower leg is now in an air boot and she moves around in a wheel chair and on crutches.

"I go on crutches, but i have a wheel chair to put the leg up when i am on public events. Next week i will start with physical therapy," Maruhn told Eurodressage. "So i feel quite fine and am optimistic to be back in the saddle soon."
