The Holsteiner foundation stallion Caretinohas passed away at age 28 last weekend. The last few days of his life Caretino spent in the equine clinic as he had a fever and blood in his urine. His condition did not improve and he was humanely put down.
Caretino was bred by Lothar Vo?lz and reared by Peter Schimmer and Heinz Struve. He was the last surviving licensed offspring of Caletto II and was out of Isidor (by Metellus x Aldato x Gambrinus). He finished third in the Stallion Performance Test in Medingen in 1986 with a score of 132,18 points.
Under Thomas Schönig Caretino qualified for the Bundeschampionate as a 5 and 6-year old. He achieved his first jumping successes at S-level at age 7. Under Bo Kristoffersen he became a member of the Danish team and booked more than 40 top placings at international S-level competitions.
Caretino produced an impressive string of internationally successful show jumping horses, including Bernardo Alves' Chupa Chup, Richard Spooner's Cristallo and Rolf-Goran Bengtsson's Casall la Silla.
Caretino's most renowned dressage offspring was Cockney. The bay Holsteiner became a Bundeschampion and Nurnberger Burgpokal winner under Nadine Capellmann and then sold as Grand Prix schoolmaster to Sonja Bolz. Caretino's son Carpaccio (by Caretino x Lantaan x Ladykiller xx) is the sire of Anne van Olst's Olympic team bronze winning Clearwater.
Caretino sired more than 60 licensed offspring and he had a breeding value index of 153 points, ranking him amongst the best producing stallions in Germany. He placed fourth on the WBFSH list of best producing show jumping sires.
