The Landgestut Celle has been losing all its foundation sires in a short period of time this year. After the passing of Wolkentanz I, Espri, Weltmeyer, Wolkenstein II, the black Hanoverian stallion Warkant passed away yesterday as well.

The 27-year old state stud owned stallion was euthanized on Sunday morning because his condition had been worsening following a tumour to the bladder.

The 1983 born Warkant was by World Cup I out of Grandel (by Grande x Pik König). Bred by Helga Axhausen and reared in Hunnesrück, Germany, Warkant started breeding in 1987 after finishing the Stallion Performance Test in Adelheidsdorf. He first bred at a station in Beedenbostel and in 1992 he switched to the station in Grethem, where he stood the rest of his life.

Warkant was a very versatile stallion but he mainly produced dressage horses. He was one of the top producers for the Verden Elite auction. Price highlights included the Warkant offsprings Wanessa (130,000 DM) and the licensed stallion Wilberforce (400,000 DM, sold to Holland). 162 horses sold via the auction in total.

Warkant sired 18 licensed offspring and 51 State Premium Mares. Over 7,000 offspring has been ranked from A to S-level in show jumping and dressage. 6,000 of those were dressage horses and 24% of them at S-level.

Warkant's most successful dressage offspring includes Hubertus Schmidts 2004 Olympic and 2006 WEG team gold medal winning mare Wansuela Suerte and Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff's Grand Prix mare Wahajama. Other Grand Prix horses are Holga Finken's Wunschtraumer and Heiner Schiergen's World Congress.

Warkant was proclaimed Hanoverian Stallion of the Year in 2002.
