The controversy of Oldenburg branded stallion Jack Sparrow's unlicensed status despite already having covered a huge amount of mares this 2012 breeding season has not yet come to an end. In a quest to obtain official licensing status for her stallion, Jack Sparrow's owner plans to have him do the Schlieckau performance test in the autumn.

In Germany already 70 mares have been tested in foal to Jack Sparrow (by Johnson x Wolkentanz II) and the hyped black stallion continues to be a major attraction to breeders, despite his whopping 2,000 euro stud fee without having offspring on the ground.

Jack Sparrow was originally licensed at the South German Stallion Licensing Under Saddle in October 2010 and entered in the Baden Wurttemberger "Stud Book I", but this approval expired automatically in 2011. As a 4-year old he could have renewed his breeding license by scoring 80 points, an average 7, or at least an 8 in dressage in a German 30-day performance test, but this didn't happen.

Ducth equestrian newspaper Paardenkrant reported that in order to secure full licensing in Germany, the stallion will need to do a successful 30-day performance test in combination with a qualification for the Bundeschampionate or score successfully in a 70-day stallion performance test, or finish five times 1st, 2nd, or 3rd at S-level dressage.

The Oldenburg Society licensed him in 2012 on the basis of his performances in the KWPN Stallion Competition and under the condition that he would do the Stallion Performance Test in The Netherlands. So far Jack Sparrow has not done a performance test, neither in Germany nor in Holland, and if it remains like this in 2012, none of his 2013 foals will get main foal book registry papers.

In agreement with the KWPN society, owner Carolyn de Roo has decided to take her stallion to Germany to complete the licensing process. Edward Gal will ride Jack Sparrow in a Bundeschampionate selection trial in May and he'll do a 30-day Stallion Performance Test in Schlieckau in November 2012. If he is successful at the selection trial and 30-day testing, Jack Sparrow will be licensed with the Baden Wurttemberg and Oldenburg society (in Studbook I). He won't be approved for the KWPN society.

In case Jack Sparrow completes the testing in Germany, Dutch bred offspring registered with the KWPN society will be entered in the A register Foal Book.

"Foals of non-licensed stallions are entered in register B with the KWPN society, but as soon as a stallion is (fully) licensed with a recognized studbook, his offspring will be entered in the KWPN register A foal book," KWPN communications rep Charlotte Gunnink told Eurodressage.
