In the absence of the entire Spanish Olympic team, the young Carmen Naesgaard edged out all competition at the 2012 Spanish Dressage Championships in Zaragoza, Spain, and claimed the Grand Prix title on the concluding day of competition on Sunday 7 October 2012. While Naesgaard captured the main trophy of the event, former Spanish Olympian Juan Antonio Jimenez became small tour champion.
The Grand Prix division was smooth sailing for Carmen Naesgaard aboard her strong moving dark bay Ciowa, a 16-year old Hanoverian by Cheenook. Naesgaard, who became the Spanish Young Rider Champion in 2008, won the Grand Prix (66.617%), Special (69.044%) and Kur to Music (73.800%) leaving all competition far behind her. Consistent riding from Fidel Diaz Amor on the 13-year old Andalusian Fandanguero IV (by Campeon IX) led him to a silver medal. The combination scored 64.600% in the Grand Prix, which ranked him sixth, but he gradually moved up to a third place in the Special (66.467%) and a second in the Kur (70.675%) which ranked him second overall. Victor Alvarez and the 11-year old PRE Curioso XXV (by Dominante XVI) was on Diaz Amor's heels but ended up with a bronze medal after posting scores of 64,979%, 67,000%, and 69,325%.
In the small tour division Juan Antonio Jimenez felt the heat of Maria Teresa Ortiz who kept on improving throughout the competition. Aboard the black Hanoverian mare Naomy, the Madrid based Jimenez finished on the golden step of the podium scoring 68,000% (PSG), 69,026% (Inter I) and 69,925% (Inter I Kur). Jimenez was first in the first two classes but finished second in the kur. His average score of 68,984% ranked him a hair's breath ahead of Ortiz on the 8-year old Dutch warmblood CEA Zorro (by Patijn), who averaged 68,448%. Henry Jr Brewah Granados and the 8-year old Dutch Warmblood gelding Zhivago (by Obelisk) were good for bronze with an average of 67,734%
