The United States has announced the dressage team for the 2013 Maccabiah held in Israel on 17 - 30 July 2013. The 19th edition of the Maccabiah will include equestrian sports for the first time.
According to Dressage-News, Austria, Chile, Germany, Hungary, Peru and the United States along with host Israel have signaled participation in equestrian sports.
The U.S. dressage team includes:
- June Brody - Lebanon, New Jersey
- Rebecca Brown - Dallas, Texas
- Rebecca Cohen - Wellington, Florida
- Wendy Garfinkel - Lebanon, New Jersey
Becky Brown of Dallas has been assigned as coach.
Young Rider Rebecca Cohen will forego the North American Young Rider Championships to be on the first Maccabi USA Equestrian Team.
Maccabiah team manager Sloane Milstein said that dressage is expected to be at FEI World Challenge Medium level held at Noam Farm near Tel Aviv on 23-25 July 22013.
“The Israel Equestrian Federation will be providing a pool of horses,” said Sloane. “I will be traveling to Israel this March to hopefully see some of the horses in the pool, as well as see if we can find other options to borrow horses for competition as well as practice before the games start. There are a few riders looking to work with contacts in Germany to possibly borrow their horses.”
The Maccabiah is the world’s largest Jewish athletic competition in the tradition and values of Maccabi, emphasizing the centrality of the State of Israel in the life of the Jewish people. The Maccabiah takes place every four (4) years in Israel - "the Jewish Olympics" as they are often called, are Maccabi World Union's largest and most famous enterprise.
