Renowned Danish warmblood breeding stallion Don Romantic has been euthanized on Wednesday night 11 September 2013 due to volvulus. The stallion suffered from a severe colic attack and could not be saved.
"Naturally we are very sad. Don Romantic was not only the most significant Danish warmblood stallion and in a league of his own from foal age until he was injured and had to end his dressage career, but he was also a great personality here at Blue Hors," said Blue Hors manager Esben Møller.
The 14-year old Don Romantic was bred by Jens Auge in Denmark and owned by Blue Hors Stud. He was by Don Schufro out of Rosita (by Romancier x Mago xx) and was approved for all major German and Scandinavian studbooks.
Don Romantic had an illustrious career as a stallion. He was Danish Foal of the Year in 1999 and sold at auction for a top price. He became the champion of the Danish Warmblood Stallion Licensing and won his stallion Performance Test.
Don Romantic was trained to FEI level by Andreas Helgstrand, but the horse never made a big international break through in the competition ring as he was sidelined by an injury.
The Danish warmblood society proclaimed Don Romantic Stallion of the Year 2010. He has more than 17 licensed offspring
Don Romantic was known to be a producer of top quality dressage horses, but some breeders also cautioned for using him as several of Don Romantic's offspring were diagnosed with career ending neck chips.
Nevertheless, Don Romantic has a huge string of successful offspring, including De La Beauté (reserve Bundeschampion in 2012), Daktylius (2011 Oldenburg regional champion), DoubleYou W (World Young Horse Championship finalist), Damino SD (Swedish Stallion Performance Test winner), Prima Donna (2011 Danish Warmblood Mare of the Year). No less than 13 direct offspring were selected this year for the 2013 Danish Warmblood Young Horse Championship in Herning.
Don Romantic was proclaimed an elite stallion in 2009.
