British based Irish dressage rider Roland Tong and his international equine partner Pompidou have parted ways. The 16-year old Westfalian gelding has not been retired but will be taking a step back from top level competition.

Pompidou is bred by Franz Adolf Wentrup and is born in 1998, sired by Prinz Wilhelm out of Roulette (by Ramiro's Son). He was initially competed for Great Britain by Gary Williams and Daryl Ware, who rode him at young riders level.

Owned by Sarah and Keith Wrigley, the bay gelding made his international debut with Roland Tong in 2010. They first competed at the CDI's in Hartpury and Hickstead at small tour level.

In 2012 Tong declared for Ireland, which opened up opportunities for team selection. The duo represented Ireland at the 2013 European Championships in Herning and 2014 World Equestrian Games in Caen, France. They became the 2013 Irish Dressage Champions.

"My good friend Pompidou (has) returned home to his owners.  He has been the most amazing horse," Tong explained. "Together we have competed from advance medium to winning international Grand Prix , competing World Cup qualifiers, European championships and finishing on a harmonious clear round at the world championships. He has given me everything and for that I am forever grateful.

Tong clearly mentioned that Pompidou will not be retired from sport. "He's not ready for retirement, far too young at heart, but an easier life will be great for him," he said. "He will now be spoilt rotten at home with his generous owners Sarah and Keith Wrigley."
